CPM worried at Hill situation

SILIGURI, Nov. 9: The CPI-M Darjeeling district committee has expressed serious concern over the recent turn of events in the Darjeeling Hills.
Following a meeting of the district committee held in Siliguri today, the district secretariat member and the state urban development minister Mr Asok Bhattacharya accused the Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha of spearheading an ‘undemocratic movement’ in the name of a separate Gorkhaland state. “The GJMM is trying to stifle the voice of the Opposition in the Hills, which is an attempt on our democratic set up. However, the state government, especially the chief minister, is giving a test of tolerance, as the government doesn’t want bloodshed in Darjeeling and our party fully supports this stand,” Mr Bhattacharya said. He however, added that adequate police protection has been provided to the All India Gorkha League president Mr Madan Tamang, who now faces a GJMM ouster diktat from the Hills for speaking against Mr Bimal Gurung.
Warning the GJMM leaderships against continuing with the ‘undemocratic activities’, the minister opined that a disillusioned Hill people were fast parting their ways from Mr Bimal Gurung.
Referring to the ongoing office boycott of the DGHC staffs at the instance of the GJMM, Mr Bhattacharya said that the temporary DGHC employees should strive for securing a permanent status and not ruin their livelihood by the GJMM’s ‘irresponsible call’. “If the DGHC staffs continue to boycott the duties, they would not get their salary and the GJMM is unlikely to feed them and their families,” the minister warmed.
Meanwhile, the state committee member Mr Jibesh Sarkar advised the GJMM leadership to refrain from hurling abusive language at the urban development minister. “We too can hurl back a befitting verbal abuse but our political tradition does not permit us to go beyond a certain limit,” Mr Sarkar said.
