LF slams GJMM for ongoing non-cooperation movement

SILIGURI, Sept. 9: The principal constituents of the Darjeeling district Left Front excluding the RSP today slammed the Gorkha Jana Mukti Morcha leadership for continuing with the ‘non cooperation’ movement in the Darjeeling Hills against the West Bengal government when the tripartite negotiation to resolve the Gorkhaland issue has started in New Delhi.
The RSP district leadership, however, struck a discordant note on the matter and defended the democratic right of the GJMM to continue with the anti state government movement.
The CPI Darjeeling district secretary Mr Ujjwal Chowdhury said that carrying on negotiation and confrontation at the same time was morally insupportable. “Democratic norms warrant that when a dialogue has started, the confrontationist verbosity the GJMM leadership is indulging in should stop. Threats like shutting down power projects and BSNL lines in the Hills would only acerbate the atmosphere, putting wheels in the successful conduct of the negotiation,” the CPI leader said. Echoing the same view, the Forward Bloc district secretary Mr Smritish Bhattacharya said that the Centre and the state government should initiate steps to appropriate the electricity and telecommunication revenue uncollected due to the ‘non cooperation’ agitation in the hills. “Besides, the GJMM leadership should see reason and exercise utmost restraint to take the negotiation process to a logical conclusion,” Mr Bhattacharya said.
The CPI-M state committee member Mr Jibesh Sarkar said that his party wanted restoration of peace in the hills. “The situation is far from normal and the democratic right to ventilate political opinion is being trampled upon. We want peace and normalcy,” he said.
Striking a discordant note, the RSP Darjeeling district secretary Mr Binay Chakravarty said that every organisation had a right to agitate in a way it liked until it infringed upon the national interests. “The New Delhi talks happen to be in their preliminary stages and my party cannot criticise the GJMM leadership for carrying on the non-cooperation movement against the state government,” Mr Chakravarty said.
