Call for Gorkhaland drives tourists away from Darjeeling

Another menace is raising its head in India’s one of the most preferred tourist destinations. Tourists have been asked to leave Darjeeling after an indefinite bandh called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha. The group has been demanding a separate state – Gorkhaland. The bandh call comes after clashes between Morcha activists, the police and local people of Siliguri on Monday. ”Tourists are welcome in Darjeeling anytime. There is no stopping them. But we are going on an indefinite strike from Tuesday,” says Roshan Giri, general secretary, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.Earlier, a lull in group’s agitation had drawn tourists but now they are fleeing. The original Gorkhaland movement of the 1980s had ended with Darjeeling being given a degree of autonomy. The Morcha is no longer satisfied with that and Darjeeling seems destined for uneasy times ahead. (
